The VACC is a low-cost alternative to laboratory tests for the diagnosis of malaria. The VACC tests 7.5 mL of blood by detecting *P. falciparum*-specific histidine-rich protein 2 antigen with a sensitivity and specificity of 85% and 100%, respectively \[[@CR12]\]. This study found similar diagnostic accuracy of VACC and microscopy but with a much lower cost of VACC.

It is often easier and cheaper to send patients home before a laboratory test is done; however, when the results are positive, the patient must come back to the health facility.
