The "Nano-fab" style of construction is ideally suited to the lightweight, compact, housing market, but can be modified for bulk storage and the like if needed. Materials are readily available, as are many local talents, and it is relatively simple to design and construct a nanofabrication machine that is easily portable, on-site, and suitable for mass-production.
When the housing market collapsed, many builders followed the "fly by night" builders of the collapse to bankruptcy. These builders often re-designed their houses on the ground after the building collapse, not intending to build at all in the near future. These new designs sometimes are much more compact than the designs before the collapse, and in some cases can be as simple as a beam and a couple of support columns. Builders can be more expensive, but often have the advantage of being experienced with the housing market collapse and ready to offer less expensive housing.
In some cases, rather than being a collapse product, many local builders have continued to design and build nanofabrication machines. While these products are usually less expensive than what was available before the collapse, some less-experienced builders may sometimes sell products that are poorly built, and consequently are in danger of being thrown away.
Some local builders can also repair older housing, but most builders do not have the equipment, experience, or training to repair housing that has been compromised. This can be a huge problem for the housing market. A "robin hood" cleanup system may help, but is rarely affordable for many local families.
It is a common misconception that nanofabrication machines are expensive to build, though they are not cheap. In some cases, a poorly-designed and built machine can be twice as expensive as a machine that is designed and built correctly. A poorly-designed and built machine will need more maintenance, and might not produce as well. This is important to keep in mind when evaluating the prices of nanofabrication machines.
